their stare seems as if it were a foreign land, rustic coats wearing in dark and cold.

jumping children, light surrounding.....light enveloping, new and different and dangerous, but silly, children playing in spheres of white.

as wild grasses play under the tall, sleepy trees, i remember looking at the green, beautiful leaves and thinking they were perfect. they were happy and giggling.

a princess, playing in a play, pouring shakespeare from a dream.

winter and bears, cotton horses and water rippling with beams and glistenings.

winter and windows and light and memories.

Interviews with Russian filmmaker Yuri Norstein! Incredible!

i have russian ancestry which i am very touched by......my grandmother, my father's mother, was born in russia......carpenan, kishinev russia. she was also jewish and often spoke in yiddish to us, which was wonderful. so whenever i hear someone speaking in russian, there is a part of me that is immediately drawn to that sound, those words......though i do not understand them, they mean something to me. yuri norstein is so amazing.....these are interviews of him, talking about his films, the process he goes through to create the beautifully ethereal and breathtaking layers of his movies and just to hear him speak is phenomenal. he is speaking in russian, but i'm sure you will understand some of what he is saying......

i would love to hear from those who know of yuri norstein and your thoughts about his work. would love to hear from you who are new to his films, as well.

Christmas......how to make it wonderful again

Christmas is beautiful, it is filled with lovely feelings, glistening wonder and brightness, but sometimes I cannot find those feelings. This year, we don't even have a tree and it is already December 14th. I just feel such an empty feeling about Christmas this year. I wish I could think of something really different to do for Christmas this time.....buying presents seems like a chore. I keep putting off going out to shop, just feeling like it's a bother. I wish I could just use my imagination and conjour up something wild and exciting for Christmas......but I am not that moved to do anything other than just try to think of something.

What do you do to make Christmas happy again? What do you do to find that magic, that feeling like Christmas could fix everything? Please write to me.....if you could share something of your beautiful Christmas, maybe I would find joy again in this season, when whispers and faint singing are somewhere far off waiting to be found.

"Kooky's Return", a wonderful, funny, charming film that is pure child!

My husband and I bought "Kooky's Return"......a film by Czech director Jan Sverak......we received it all the way from his country and we were so thrilled to have a copy. This film is so unusual,so different......it is for children, it is for adults.....it is for a timeless soul of people who remember and live childhood in their hearts. I will never, ever tire of watching this wonderful film. It brings back the feelings and dreams I had as a child. I love this movie!!!

Yuri Norstein, one of the most incredible filmmakers of all time!

Yuri Norstein, a Russian filmmaker is truely the most magnificent, innovative and unique filmmaker I have ever seen. His films are amazing, totally, unbelievably amazing. This is "The Hedgehog in the Fog".....a magical, sweet, ethereal film of innocense and beauty. Yuri Norstein is completely in a class by himself!!

Two movies that I absolutely love.....

These are two films that I love so much, especially "Ponette". It is a story about a little girl who loses her mother in an automobile accident. It is French and mostly about children, which is one reason why I love it so much. Ponette is trying to understand what has happened to her mother and goes through many experiences in learning how to cope with losing her. Beautifully filmed, sad and touching, I will never tire of this melancholy, deeply moving, wonderful film. I hope you will watch it someday.

The other film I am sharing with you is "Les Choristes".....a charming, funny and wonderful film about an orphanage of boys who have been forgotten and are trying to understand life on their own. A composer becomes their teacher and turns their wild hearts to the moving lessons and joy of music and they are changed forever. A wonderful, sweet film.
